Chapter Six

The flight over the Brooks Range was accomplished in silence, Mike looking grimmer by the minute.

Callie prudently kept her mouth shut and stared at the austere landscape until her eyes burned. Fine, let Mike be the one to break the silence. See if she cared.

With such a late start and the delays, it was well after nine in the evening before they landed at the Barrow airport. It was light, of course. That far north the sun rose in May, and set sometime in August, their “day” actually lasting eighty-four days.

Except for a few terse words when they found a restaurant for a late dinner, Mike remained quiet. And when they finally checked into their motel, Callie escaped to her room with only a muttered good-night following her.

“I’ll good night him,” she grumbled, climbing into the shower for a long time. The hot water stung her skin, but it didn’t erase the memory of his caresses.

She knew Mike had a lot to think about—it couldn’t be easy changing your understanding of a woman so quickly, yet her own heart was getting mangled in the process. Maybe she had been the poster child for small-town wholesomeness all her life, but that didn’t mean she lacked sex appeal.

Callie put on pajamas, then lay on the bed, tapping her fingers on her stomach. They were in the newest motel in Barrow, and it was a nice room. Tomorrow she’d finally get to see polar bears in the wild and a completely different kind of life…except none of it really mattered.

Nothing had changed because of a kiss; she’d have to accept that and come up with a new strategy. And it wasn’t as though she hadn’t known the kiss was a mistake when it started—she had no one to blame but herself.

“Callie?” Mike’s muffled voice was followed by a light tap on the door, and she sighed. “Are you still awake?”

She could have taken the coward’s way out, but instead she got up and wrenched the door open. “Yes, I’m still awake. What do you want?”

“Uh…” Mike rubbed the back of his neck, looking too damned sexy and alive to ignore. “Listen, Callie. We should talk.”

The inside of her mouth felt stuffed with dry cotton and she swallowed. “Maybe we should wait until tomorrow.”

“No, I have to apologize. I feel terrible about what happened.”

Callie’s fingernails dug into her palm and she relaxed with an effort. “Like I said, about what?”

“Sheesh, quit playing dumb. I shouldn’t have kissed you. It was wrong, and I’m sorry for letting things get out of control.”

“Oh…I see.” Her eyes narrowed. “You’re taking responsibility for what happened.”

“Yes! You have every right to be upset. We’re friends and you should have been able to trust me.”

Callie fought the temptation to scream. What business did Mike have, taking the “blame?” They’d kissed, big deal. They were two healthy adults who found each other attractive. At least she hoped he found her attractive. Mike’s feelings were hard to understand at this point.

“And what part did I play in this drama?” she asked with deceptive calm.
